Square dancing might look complicated when you first watch it, but you do not have to know the steps before you arrive.
A caller guides the dancers through a series of movements and tells you what to do as the dance progresses. You learn by listening, moving, and practicing with the other dancers around you.
Our beginner lessons give you a chance to learn at a comfortable pace while meeting people and getting familiar with the basics of square dancing.

How Beginner Square Dance Lessons Work
Beginner lessons introduce the basic calls and movements you need to participate in a square dance. Each class builds on what you learned before, so attending regularly helps you become more comfortable and confident on the dance floor.

Let us show you how much fun square dancing can be.
You don't need a partner or any previous dance experience. Our beginner lessons are friendly, relaxed, and guided step-by-step by our caller. Each class builds on the previous class so try to commit to coming for at least a few months to learn the first 50 calls and variations. There are more levels to learn after that!
Most Common Questions About Beginner Square Dance Lessons
Do I Need a Partner?
Nope! You do not need to bring a partner to beginner square dance lessons. Singles, couples, friends, and families are welcome. Square dancing is naturally social, and you will dance with other people throughout the evening.
Do I Need Dance Experience?
Not at all. You do not need to know how to square dance, ballroom dance, country dance, or any other type of dance. The caller will guide you through the movements as you learn. It is completely normal to feel a little lost at first.
What Should I Wear?
Come Comfortable. You do not need a special square-dance outfit for your first lesson. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move and shoes that are suitable for dancing. The most important thing? Come ready to have fun.
How Much Do Beginner Lessons Cost?
For the current September 2026 beginner series, the first three Monday lessons are free for new dancers. After that, classes are $5 each. Check the current schedule for the latest information.
How Long it Takes to Learn Square Dancing?
You can start participating right away, but becoming comfortable with the calls takes practice. The beginner program builds progressively, so regular attendance is recommended.
Where Are the Lessons Held?
We dance Monday evenings at My Hometown Community Center in West Valley City, Utah. Our calendar includes regular dances, beginner lessons, theme nights, and special events.
